About Sunroad Hyotan-yama Shopping Street

Sunroad Hyotan-yama Shopping Street (officially Hyotan-yama Chuo Shopping Street) is located just north of Kintetsu Nara Line’s Hyotan-yama Station, stretching about 300 meters under a covered arcade. It is known as the first shopping street in Japan to build an arcade over a national highway (the former Route 170). The street is lined with grocery stores, clothing shops, restaurants, clinics, and more, supporting the daily lives of local residents. Along the way, visitors can also spot benches and decorations featuring the motif of a “hyotan” (gourd), adding a playful touch to the shopping experience.

History of Sunroad Hyotan-yama Shopping Street

The history of the shopping street dates back to the early Showa era. After World War II, it grew into a central hub for local commerce and daily necessities. In the past, buses used to pass through the arcade, which is why many shop signs are still displayed at a height of about four meters. Over the decades, the street has evolved while maintaining a balance between long-established shops and newer businesses, making it a living reflection of both history and modern community life.
