What is a “Snack Woman”? About the Trending “Sna-Jo”
Lately, you may have heard the term “Sna-Jo.” It refers to women who enjoy snack bars at night. It’s become a hot topic, even being featured in TV dramas! These women build a comfortable and trusting relationship with the unique mamas, sometimes being encouraged or scolded by them… It’s a place of relaxation for women dealing with work stress. The presence of regulars is also important. In snack bars, people of all ages and genders communicate, and as they meet repeatedly, they become friends. More and more women are finding themselves drawn to this third place, which is neither home nor work.
I Am One of Them
Well, what can I say, I am also one of these Sna-Jo (laughs). In my previous job, I often worked in rural areas with few izakayas or bars open late at night, so I used to drink quietly at home. One day, a former colleague took me to a snack bar, and that’s how I got hooked on the charm of snack bars. Even so, I never had the courage to open the door alone, so I always went with someone and enjoyed chatting with the person next to me. Before I knew it, I started to become interested in having my own third place or space.
I Want to Be a Snack Bar Mama
For me, there wasn’t a big turning point; it was more like the idea of “it seems fun if I do it” kept growing in my mind, and my reckless nature made me decide, “I want to do it now!” Actually, I was on an overseas assignment in America at the time (laughs). But once I made up my mind, I started preparing to return to Japan. Although the decision was sudden, looking back, I realize that since my university days, I had been inviting friends over to my place for “Bar Nana” or “Snack Nana,” serving drinks over the counter, so maybe I was suited for this all along. My friends are cheering me on, saying it’s my calling!
This is just a prologue. It’s a small start, but I hope it piques your interest.♡
