How I Spend My Time at a Snack Bar – Kazu’s Case
The way I spend my time differs depending on whether I’m visiting a regular snack bar or one I’m visiting for the first time.
As I mentioned in my previous article (How to Choose a Snack Bar), the time and day of the week can also affect how I spend my time at a snack bar.
At My Regular Snack Bar
I choose a snack bar based on my mood, as each one has its own unique atmosphere.
For example, if I feel like singing, I’ll go to this one! If I want to have a lively chat, I’ll go to that one! I switch it up based on how I feel.
The ambiance can also vary depending on the day and time. For instance, early in the evening (right after opening) or on less crowded days (like Mondays or Thursdays) are often quieter.
On the other hand, if I’m in the mood for a lively atmosphere, I’ll visit late on a weekend, when it’s usually bustling.
At a Snack Bar I’m Visiting for the First Time
Snack bars are places where the “Mama” rules. The best way to enjoy your time is to follow her lead.
It’s also important to remember that there are regulars in these places.
The key is to ask the Mama questions and not just assume you know how to spend your time there.
Tips
Arriving right after the bar opens and chatting with the Mama can make you feel welcome, even if it’s your first time at the snack bar.

This is the Snack where I went last week
The Most Important Thing #1: Where You Sit
You might think that sitting anywhere that’s open is fine, but that’s not the case.
In the Mama’s mind, she’s already planned where people should sit based on their personalities, interests, and the best experience for everyone.
It’s impressive how well they know their customers and how they thoughtfully arrange seating to create a pleasant atmosphere.
The Most Important Thing #2: Don’t Act Selfishly
Avoid drinking too much, hogging the karaoke mic, or bothering the person next to you.
Especially at a new snack bar, it’s important not to disrupt the atmosphere or cause trouble for the Mama or regulars.
Maintaining proper manners and respecting the space is crucial.
When you first visit a new snack bar, it’s best to go with the flow and let the Mama and the vibe of the place guide you. Once you’re welcomed in, you can slowly start participating in conversations without overstepping.
Smart Ways to Spend Your Time
People who can show consideration for the Mama and the bar are smart.
Here are a few ways I try to spend my time smartly at a snack bar:
① About Drinks
It’s good manners to say, “How about a drink?” to the Mama or staff.
This gesture of consideration can help close the distance between you and the Mama.
When ordering refills, it’s also important to be mindful of the timing, such as saying, “Please get me another drink when you have a moment.” (If you have a bottle, you can mix your own drink to save them the trouble.)
② Conversations
It’s best to talk about common topics!
Instead of just talking about yourself, try to engage others by asking about shared topics or redirecting questions to those around you. This helps everyone at the snack bar join in on the conversation.
Or, you could seek advice from the Mama or regulars about something you’re dealing with.
③ Karaoke
Choose songs that fit the vibe of the snack bar.
If you’re wondering what kind of songs to sing, check the song history. You’ll get an idea of the types of songs that are popular there.
Singing songs that everyone knows can lead to group sing-alongs with the Mama and regulars!
④ Other Tips
There are many other things you can do. Just try to act in ways that benefit the bar.
For example, enjoy the snacks provided! Time your trips to the bathroom well! Plan your payment timing! (And make sure to have exact change ready.) Help keep the karaoke lively! Before leaving, clean up after yourself! (And don’t forget to say, “I’ll be back!”) There are plenty of ways to be considerate!
