Today, I’ll be writing about last week’s adventure to “Kyoto and Osaka’s Snack Bars.”
Day 1: Kyoto’s Chushojima Snack Bars
Have you heard of Chushojima in Kyoto? It was once home to a bustling red-light district, where many courtesans worked during the Edo period. Though the liveliness of that era has faded, a few snack bars remain, keeping the spirit of the past alive in this quiet area. You can still feel the remnants of old nightlife culture within the serene streets.
Many of the bars are beloved by locals, often filled with regulars enjoying a drink. I even had the pleasure of trying some unique spirits.
Day 2: Osaka’s Snack Bars
Near JR Osaka Station and Umeda, you’ll find plenty of bustling shopping streets. One such place is the Hankyu Higashi Dori Shopping Street. Located in Osaka’s Umeda district, it’s a lively spot popular with both tourists and locals. The street stretches about 800 meters and serves as a nightlife hub with many snack bars lining the area.
This visit was also tied to our upcoming outdoor snack bar event, “Snack Yokocho,” at the EXPO OPEN STREET event celebrating the half-year mark before the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo!
We’ll be setting up three snack bars from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM at the south plaza in front of JR Osaka Station, so feel free to stop by.
In addition, we’ll also be holding the “Osaka Snack Night Tour” on the same day, where I’ll be your guide! This special tour (reservation required, limited to 5 people) will take you around Osaka’s nightlife spots, visiting 2 local snack bars.
