Kazu’s Snack Bar Adventures Vol.13: ” Kiyosumi-Shirakawa”

“Cheers from Japan! Exploring Local Bars and a Hidden Gem in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa”

Hello everyone! I’m Kazu, your Yokocho Tour guide, here with a little adventure I had visiting some new spots in Tokyo. Today, I’ll share my experience at a lively izakaya and a cozy snack bar in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa. Maybe this will inspire you to go out and explore your own local scene!

Discovering “Daruma” – A Popular Izakaya

Close to Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station, Daruma is a bustling izakaya that’s always packed! If you want to visit, it’s best to make a reservation or come right when they open. The atmosphere here is warm, with a unique U-shaped counter that encourages conversation among customers. There’s a cozy tatami area as well, but I recommend sitting at the counter for the full experience. Daruma even featured in the show Kodoku no Gurume (The Solitary Gourmet), and they offer a wide variety of delicious dishes, making it worth multiple visits!

Venturing into Snack Bars: The Welcoming “サンメーク”

After my meal, I decided to explore nearby snack bars. Out of the three options, I picked Snack サンメーク based on its welcoming vibe. Established over 40 years ago, Sun Make has a rich history, and the kind-hearted owner creates a relaxing atmosphere. The bar uniquely features only booth seating—no counter—making it feel cozy and private. Decorated in a nostalgic Showa-era style, this spot is both affordable and fun, offering a drink-and-sing experience for about ¥3,000. The friendly service, affordable prices, and nostalgic ambiance make サンメーク a memorable visit!
