Kazu’s Snack Bar Adventures Vol.17: A Peek into Japan’s Cozy Bar Culture

Hi there! This is Kaz, your friendly guide to the world of Japanese snack bars. 🍺
Let’s raise a glass to another great week—Kanpai! 🍻

Today, I’ll share some fun stories from my recent visits to snack bars, where the magic happens at the counter. Whether it’s chatting with regulars or listening to quirky exchanges between customers and staff, snack bars are full of laughter, wisdom, and surprise.

Eavesdropping on Snack Bar Wisdom

Snack bars are not just about drinks; they’re about the conversations. Whether it’s life advice from the mama (owner) or the banter between customers, the dialogue often leaves me amused—and inspired.

Here are two standout moments from this week featuring a slightly ditsy but lovable part-time girl at one of the bars I visited:

“Who’s Shirakawa-Go?”

I brought back a souvenir from Gifu Prefecture, a package clearly labeled Shirakawa-Go. As I handed it over, the girl suddenly asked, “Who’s Shirakawa-Go?” Everyone burst out laughing as we realized she thought it was someone’s name.

We explained it’s actually a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site in Japan. She didn’t seem impressed by that but got excited over the Sarubobo (a traditional doll) keychain attached to the package. Turns out she knew Sarubobo but not Shirakawa-Go! Cue more laughter and playful teasing.

Jumpin’ Jack Boy Confusion

During karaoke, she started singing Jumpin’ Jack Boy by WANDS with a customer. Midway through, she asked, “What does Jumpin’ Jack Boy even mean?”

Before anyone could answer, she confidently declared, “It’s about a boy named Jack jumping around!”—like something straight out of a junior high English class.

This spiraled into her trying to “translate” the song: “This isn’t just any Jack; it’s a special Jack!” We couldn’t stop laughing. Someone finally explained that Jumpin’ Jack is a metaphor for a puppet, reflecting the frustrations of the band’s lead singer at the time.

Snack bars are full of these golden moments. So next time you visit, keep your ears open—you never know what you’ll overhear!

Kaz’s First-Time Snack Bar Experience

This week, I also discovered a new snack bar for myself. As I approached the door, I heard the classic Japanese hit Katte ni Shiyagare by Kenji Sawada playing inside. That was my cue to step in!

The warm atmosphere and lively customers immediately made me feel at home. One of the staff performed LOVE Machine by Morning Musume, which had everyone singing along. When it was my turn to sing, I went with SHAKE by SMAP—a crowd-pleaser that got everyone hyped.

After the song, my score was 88 points, and everyone started cheering. I thought they were just being nice, but then I realized the reason—they have a “tequila service” for anyone who scores a double number! That night, I ended up with eight tequila shots… and a lot of laughs.
