Why is the Host Called ‘Mama’ in Japanese Snack Bars?

Snack bars in Japan are often called “Snack,” and the term “Mama” refers to the female owner or manager of the establishment.

Where does the name “Mama” come from?

Mama seems to have originated from the English word “Ma’am” or “Mam.” It originally referred to the female proprietress or manager of traditional Japanese inns, known as ryokans, who oversaw both guests and staff, similar to a landlady. The term “Ma’am” was adopted directly from English, as used by American visitors, and was later applied to drinking establishments, resulting in the term “Mama” for snack bars and similar venues.

The reason why the male counterpart isn’t called “Papa” is likely due to the perception that customer service roles were primarily performed by women. In such establishments, the Mama-san would be the visible face, while male owners or managers would typically remain behind the scenes. Hence, the term “Master” was adopted, conveying the meaning of a manager or head of the establishment.
